Foreign ministers arrive

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha and Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham will visit Sri Lanka this week.

The Indian Foreign Minister on the invitation of Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando will arrive on a two-day visit on October 14. He will lead a high powered delegation and will also chair the Indo-Sri Lanka joint commission with Minister Fernando. Yashwant Sinha will also call on the President, Prime Minister and political party leaders.

The Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham will arrive on October 14, on a three-day visit. He will also visit Jaffna and four other regions.

Meanwhile, Singapore, Minister of Foreign Affairs Raymone Lim Siangeat, Foreign Minister of Oman, Yusuf Bin Alavi Bin Alavi Bin Abdullah, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar, Ranjeeva Marcel will arrive in Colombo today to participate at the Fourth Council of the Ministers meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation (IOR-RAC)

Deepavali at Galle Face Green

Deepavali festival will be celebrated for the first time at Galle Face Green on Friday October 24. Ministry of Hindu Religious Affairs has made elaborate arrangements with a release of a new postal stamp.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will inaugurate the celebrations at 4 pm.

Several Indian and Sri Lankan artistes, with South Indian violin maestro Kunnakudy Vaidyanathan will be in attendance. Gifts and financial donations will also be presented to the victims of war from the North and the East at the celebrations.

UNESCO hat trick for Lanka

Sri Lanka has been elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO on Friday, October 10, 2003. This is the third occasion that Sri Lanka elected to the Executive Board of UNESCO, during its fifty-eighth year history.

China, India and Japan along with 140 nations, out of a total of 190 nations cast their vote in favour in Sri Lanka. The Executive Board of UNESCO consists of 58 members and fifty per cent of them are elected every two years.

Donation needed

Ushani Iranthika Amarasinghe, a four-year-old girl suffering from a cardiac ailment and neurotic disorder has been advised to undergo a heart surgery.

The operation to be done at the Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital is estimated to cost Rs. 500,000. Her father W.P. Gamini Amarasinghe of No F-15, Police Flats at Maradana appeals to the public to help collect necessary funds for the operation. Contributions can be made to A/c No.209-046629-8 of the People's Bank, Maradana Branch.

Financial assistance needed

A destitute mother seeks financial assistance to educate her only son, who is grade 10 student. The woman, who lived in Canada with her lawyer husband, returned to Sri Lanka destitute after his death.

All the family's funds were spent on treating the ailing husband who was bed ridden. Now seeking a living by doing odd jobs, she appeals to the general public to sponsor her sons education. Her contact details can be obtained by calling (2429265) (Silumina).

Need assistance

A.A.K. Somalatha, a 31-year-old mother of a small child at Athaudakanda, Alawala, Veyangoda is suffering from Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and needs immediate heart surgery. According to Cardiothoracic surgeon G.A.C. Amarasena, the surgery is needed as early as possible and can be performed at Nawaloka Hospital at a cost of 208,000.

Half the amount will be released by the President's Fund, and Somalatha seeks generous contributions from the public to save her life. Contributions can be sent to A/c. No. 02-4201801-4 Hatton National Bank, Nittambuwa.

Tharika needs financial support

Miss G. Hashini Tharika (5) of No. 244, Andaragaha Road, Kaludewala, Panadura is suffering from an acute heart ailment (Atrial Septal Defect) and Dr. Aruna Kapuruge, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Sri Jayawardenepura Hospital has recommended urgent heart surgery to save her life.

The surgery plus disposables and drugs are estimated to cost Rs. 350,000. Hashini's father G.D. Jayaratne says he has no fixed job and as such is unable to foot this bill. He requests philanthropists and the general public to help his child's cause by sending whatever financial contributions possible to expedite the surgery.

All contributions should be remitted to account number 1-0043-01-4469-0 at the National Savings Bank, Panadura Branch.
