PA wants public apology from PM

The People's Alliance on Friday demanded a public apology from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for what he had said at the United Nations General Assembly. People's Alliance spokesman Dr. Sarath Amunugama addressing the weekly press briefing held at the Opposition Leader's Office, Colombo, warned that they would bring a no-faith motion against the Prime Minister, if he didn't tender an apology.

Dr. Amunugama said that the PA Parliamentary group had unanimously decided to bring a motion of no-faith against the Prime Minister for his speech at the UN General Assembly and for several other reasons. The government's role at the World Trade Organisation and non-representation at the World Leaders' meeting against terrorism were also identified as major reasons.

"We want the PM to make a public apology in Parliament. Otherwise we will go ahead with the no-faith motion," Amunugama said. He suggested that the government should send Minister S.B.Dissanayake who will genuinely represent the farmers at the next World Trade Organisation (WTO) to be held in Geneva.

The PA also requested the Prime Minister to send a different group who will sincerely represent the country and not the Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister to Geneva next time. (DPL)
