Arts

A blend of media, subjects and styles

Lesley Holdsworth Gaynor Ott

An exhibition that combines paintings, drawings and photographs, aptly titled 'Blends' open at the Artists Gallery 18A, Sarasavi Gardens, Nugegoda on October 30. This exhibition which runs till November 2 features the work of two artists, Gaynor Ott, from Australia, Lesley Holdsworth from the UK.

Lesley Holdsworth studied art and design throughout school, culminating in her A'Levels. Here, she was able to experiment with many different art forms, both 2D and 3D. She enjoyed pen and pencil sketching as well as working in acrylics. She particularly enjoyed working on the human form, especially the intricacies of the human face.

Wanting to keep her work fresh and un-pressurised, she chose not to specialise in art when studying for her teacher training. Instead, she kept it up as a hobby, drawing and painting as a way to relax and unwind. Outside the academics of art, she felt less constrained in what she painted, and more able to broaden her scope and experiment with different styles, says a press release from the Artists Gallery.

Since arriving in Sri Lanka almost two years ago, Lesley has dedicated more time to her artwork. She has felt inspired by much of what she seen, both in her travels around Sri Lanka and overseas. She finds herself constantly looking out for potential subjects - be it a large scene or some small hidden detail. Taking photographs to help with her paintings, she soon discovered that more often than not, the photographs stood alone as a beautiful piece of art. As a result, Lesley's work has become a blend of media, subject and style - enough to keep her intrigued for a long time to come.

Gaynor Ott is currently in Sri Lanka working as a volunteer as apart of the Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development Program. Her training is in civil engineering and commerce, and she is consulting for the Industrial Development Board of Ceylon in project management. Gaynor finds that oil painting is an excellent foil for the dryer subjects she is used to tackling! Art is a creative outlet which reflects her experiences in Sri Lanka.

Gaynor grew up in Perth, Western Australia and won several awards for her work. She was a past student of Celia Netoslisky, and has sought further training from S. H. Sarath of the 'Artists' Gallery.

Her paintings in this exhibition are strongly influenced by Sri Lankan landscape and culture, and reveal her interest in bold design, colour, and texture.

Gaynor's philosophy is to create pieces that catch the eye, and that lift the mood of the environment in which they are hung!
