The Heritage, Nuwara Eliya : Gracious bygone era cocooned in modern comfort

by Beverley Jansz

Front view of the Heritage

The Heritage Group has gone through a remarkable metamorphosis in its Heritage Hotel at Nuwara Eliya. Today, the hotel is very different from what it was on my last visit to the property. It has done a U-turn down the time-tunnel to make the Heritage look like what it was during the spacious days of the British Raj.

The 20-room stately mansion had been the country seat of British Governor Henry Gregory, designed and built according to the classical architectural concepts of the Victorian era, and stands amidst idyllic surroundings in the heart of Nuwara Eliya with the famous Nuwara Eliya Race Course and Victoria Park in the foreground.

In effecting improvements great care has been taken to ensure that no vandalism is done to the architectural designs and lay-out. The colonial look of the building and of the rooms has been restored. Quality antique furniture from 'Senarath Antiques' of Ambalangoda has being introduced into the spacious rooms which have been planned at a time when space was not a great problem.

The new-look 'Waterfalls Restaurant' takes its name from the breathtakingly beautiful falls that surrounded Nuwara Eliya. Pictures of these waterfalls adorn the restaurant walls. This restaurant offers Eastern and Western cuisine to suit the individual tastes of discerning clients who have a preference for heritage hotels.

The 'Black Magic' Bar is well stocked with a wide range of wines and beverages. With its exceptionally courteous services, and relaxed atmosphere, it is popular not only with the hotel guests but also with planters and the business community in and around the hill station.

The Heritage Club organised by the hotel is gaining rapid popularity and the membership is on the increase.

Club Members are entitled to room, food and beverage concessions.

Heritage Nuwara Eliya is one of the most stately and graceful buildings in all Central Sri Lanka. With its extensive and well laid out gardens, Nuwara Eliya's salubrious climate, personalised service and in company not too large to feel crowded nor too small to feel holed-up. Heritage Nuwara Eliya is indeed the ideal place to spend a relaxed holiday.

Here is a hotel where the visitor will see and experience the philosophy of 'Small is Beautiful' in its applied sense and where the management and staff of the hotel live upto their promise of 'The Heritage' being 'the friendliest hotel in town.'

Pussellawa Rest House - with a scenic view of lush green tea plantation

The Pussellawa Rest House, owned and managed by the Ceylon Hotels Corporation (CHC) has become a popular location for a stopover passengers and tourists travelling between Gampola and Nuwara Eliya. The rest house has a 35-year-old history of being one of the popular rest houses run by the CHC.

Overlooking a lush green tea plantation, at Pussellawa, the scenic beauty of the view from the hotel's restaurant, is breathtaking. The rest house has three well appointed guest rooms including a family room.

Guests get a scenic view of lush green tea plantations, from their rooms. Under the direction and guidance of CHC Chairman, Bodhisiri Ranasinghe, the Pussellawa Rest House has been fully refurbished and now offers modern facilities to the discerning traveller, both foreign and Sri Lankan, Senior Manager, Marketing/Travel, Ceylon Hotels Corporation, Ranjith Balasuriya said.

He said that senior hotelier A. K. Senathilaka who is the manager of the rest house is making tremendous efforts to popularise the hotel among tourists travelling between Gampola and Nuwara Eliya.

The rest house offers a wide selection of Western Eastern, Chinese and International cuisine, but the spicy Sri Lankan rice and curry is a big hit among travellers. (BJ)
