This will be the twentieth annual presentation of Kamini Witharana and her students of needle art, and of the interior design course at the Ladies College Vocational Centre, Colombo. The exhibition will be held at the Colombo Plaza Hotel from October 31 to November 2 from 10 am to 8. pm. Mahinda Samarasinghe, Minister of Labour and Employment and Mrs.Samarasinghe will be the chief guests.

The eight to ten formal and informal table settings arranged to various themes with intricate hand-made patchwork and appliques, crockery and cutlery and exquisite interior decor to match, will provide a world of ideas to everyone from housewives to working couples as well as persons involved in the hotel and tourist industry.

The 'Silver Wedding' will be a table display with table decor and other linen done with exquisite white cut-work embroidery called 'Hadanga'. The trellis work on the cake placed in the centre of the table, and the clear colour harmony of white and silver will contribute to the rich look of the setting.

Arum lilies will glorify the table setting of the 'Golden Wedding Jubilee' which will be in white and gold for a family gathering of six.

'Mothers' Day' will be celebrated with shades of Lilac, coloured glassware and silver cutlery tied with brocade ribbon.

A vase of Carnations, the traditional flowers for the Mothers' Day, will be on display besides the round ribbon cake.

'Breakfast all out of fruits', a novel concept in appliques and patchwork, 'Oriental table setting' and 'Formal dinner in shades of blue for the fifth wedding celebration' will be among the other table settings at the exhibition.

Both local and foreign diplomats will be on the panel of judges to select the three best table settings.

Apart from these table settings, Gems of Summer', a quilt with intricate work done by Kamini and three of her students will be on display.

The tiny summer flowers embroidered and appliqued on this quilt had taken up six weeks of continuous labour. And another six weeks had gone for quilting.

Christmas gifts and many attractive items for the forthcoming season and for the home front will be among the other eyecatching items on display.

The exhibition is open to schoolchildren for half rates in view of the introduction of patchwork in the school syllabus for vocational studies.
