Sri Lanka dawns in Australia

The traditional rabaana quickens the pulse in a warm welcome to the show.

A gala event to promote tourism, trade and investment in Sri Lanka was hosted in Australia recently by Major General Janaka Perera, High Commissioner for Sri Lanka and Mrs. Vajira Perera. "An evening with Sri Lanka", as it was called, was held at the prestigious Hyatt Hotel Canberra, and combined a reception and traditional dance recital with a photographic exhibition.

Renowned dancer Khema delights the Australian audience as she performs traditional Kandyan and Low Country dances.

The 'Dawn of Hope' exhibition sponsored by Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited, featured the work of eight ANCL photographers whose pictures depicted Sri Lanka's journey from war to peace.

The exhibit also included an outstanding collection of black and white prints from a bygone era, drawn from the newspaper archives.

The event was the first in a series of activities to be organised by Sonali Samarasinghe, Counsellor (Information) of the Sri Lanka High Commission in Australia, in keeping with the 'regaining Sri Lanka' concept of the government.

Invitees included Philip Ruddock, Attorney General and former Minister of Immigration, Multicultural Affairs and Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nick Minchin, Minister of Finance and Administration and Gary Hardgrave, Minister of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship. The show received considerable publicity in Australia and was attended by a number of parliamentarians, diplomats, businessman and the media.
