Golden Eve 2003

An educational programme in the form of a variety entertainment based on the History of Western Music and the development of Western Music was successfully staged recently by the students of the Western Music Association of D.S. Senanayake College Colombo.

Under the creative expertise of the teacher in charge Swarna Gurusinghe the programme focused on four great composers representing the history of music - the periods Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern with illustrations of relevant musical pieces, songs and dances to give a better appreciation of the music.

A ballet presentation of the Trout Quintet by the younger students included a fish dance as well as the song and dance of the birds and was well received. A new experiment the moves of a chess game accompanied by music was a novel idea of Swarna Gurusinghe which emphasized the vast field to which music could be used.

Western Music which has been included in the school syllabus from the years 6 to 11 gave the opportunity to around 350 students to take part and without damaging the harmony, continuity and rhythm Tamil music (Bhajan) Eastern music (drums of Sri Lanka), oriental singing (Nurthi Gee) and an Oriental band played on the same stage.
