Wrangle over top police seat still on

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

With several DIGs seeking Supreme Court intervention to determine their seniority, the post of IGP may continue to remain unoccupied for an extended period.

The Constitutional Council, which met last week put off making a decision upon learning that the issue of seniority had not been resolved.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that Supreme Court has referred the matter to the National Police Commission (NPC) and sources said that they were examining the seniority of some senior DIGs, would arrive at a decision soon.

Government sources said the Constitutional Council would appoint the next Inspector General of Police (IGP) after the Supreme Court delivers its judgement.

The Interior Ministry has forwarded the names of four senior DIGs, Chandra Fernando, Gamini Randeni, T. I. de Silva, and Jayatissa Herath to the Constitutional Council to decide the most suitable candidate. Earlier the Constitutional Council did not approve the recommendation of the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to appoint Senior DIG T.I. de Silva. The President under the powers vested in her, appointed Senior DIG, T. I. de Silva as the acting Inspector General of Police a fortnight ago.
