Cruelty in the name of cricket by Reggie Fernando, Our London Corr. A British woman Kim Cooling who has returned from a holiday in Sri Lanka has painted a painful picture of the country in an article in the Daily Mail (Friday, October 17) claiming that Sri Lanka is killing all its stray dogs with cyanide, purely to please the England cricketers and their fans who will descend upon Sri Lanka in November for the forthcoming test series. She has also appealed to the England and Wales Cricket Board 'to oppose this massacre strongly, and has requested the British public to contact the Sri Lanka High Commission in London and do likewise. Her harrowing tale which has been given much prominence states: I've just returned from a holiday in Sri Lanka where I adopted two stray dogs which will soon be joining us in the UK. Both are currently with a vet in Colombo receiving treatment to make them healthy for the journey. 'It's rather poignant that these two little dogs will soon be living a life of luxury while the other stray dogs in Kandy and Colombo are soon to be rounded up. 'And the reason for this planned carnage ? The British cricket team are visiting Sri Lanka next month, so the authorities plan to clear the streets for the English supporters. It's somewhat bizarre that these animals will be slaughtered for the British, who are renowned for their love for animals, especially the dog, a man's best friend. |
