Lecture not chaired by BASL President The President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), Ananda Wijesekara PC, has written in response to our news item last week headlined 'BASL members call for removal of Chief Justice stating that, contrary to our report, he had not chaired the Lecture by UN Rapporteur Dato Param Cumaraswamy. The Lecture being chaired by Desmond Fernando PC, Mr. Wijesekara had attended as an invitee. The Sunday Observer regrets the error. Mr. Wijesekara also states in his letter that, in the discussion following the lecture, "a few lawyers" had asked about action being taken by the BASL regarding the premature retirement of Justice Mark Fernando and the Michael Fernando case. "I informed them that the Executive Committee ...discussed the first and decided that since the retirement was both voluntary and personal, the Executive Committee should not interfere or proceed further. As regard Michael Fernando, I informed the meeting that the matter was discussed by the Bar Council sometime back," Mr. Wijesekara adds. "I also wish to make very clear that during the entire meeting where I was present there was certainly no call by BASL members for the removal of the Chief Justice," he also states. Editor's Note: Our reporter stands by this aspect of the news report concerning the Chief Justice. |
