Asian nations at poverty reduction parley The need for a South Asia convention on 'Technology for Poverty' Reduction was identified as the means to benefit millions of poor, especially in the South Asian region, at a conference on 'Technologies for Poverty Reduction: Working towards a regional strategy' held in New Delhi recently. The convention would facilitate - use of appropriate technology nationally, regionally and internationally; documentation and sharing of best practices and experiences; establishment of fair trade mechanisms for South Asian products of poor and informal sector; up-scaling of development projects for the poor and involve the poor in planning and implementation; establishment of a protection mechanism for unorganised sector and stimulating processes for knowledge and skills development. The need of democracy and pluralism of technology, where technology benefits the majority and people have a choice of technologies to meet their requirements and the need for strong political will were also identified vital in adopting appropriate strategies to ensure new technologies are made to work for the poor. The participants also agreed to formulate stakeholder groups and select an apex body in their respective countries within the next three months and to prepare a consolidated proposal to be presented to the UN and SAARC within the next six months. Delegates from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh participated at the conference, organised by the Intermediate Technology Development Group (ITDG), the Rural Policy Development Institute (RDPI) of Pakistan and the India Development Group.
