Program to promote private sector-led economic growth

By Chamikara Weerasinghe

The Government on Tuesday launched its national program to promote private sector-led economic growth under Regaining Sri Lanka (RSL), with the assistance of the United Nations country team.

The Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation said that under this program, the Sri Lanka National Millennium Development Goals (MDG) will be targeted under the guidance of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Secretary to the Ministry, Charitha Ratwatte, Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation sources said.

The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), UNICEF, UNDP and other multilateral and bilateral donors will assist the MDG campaign in Sri Lanka by way of funding and providing technical assistance.

The Millennium Development Goals were sanctioned by 147 Heads of State at the Millennium Summit in September 2000 and adopted by 191 nations in total. The Government of Sri Lanka has incorporated these goals in its program 'RSL' with emphasis on poverty reduction, Policy Development and Implementation Ministry sources said.

A Deputy Director of the Ministry of Policy Development and Implementation, V. Sivagnanasothi said concerning Sri Lanka National MDG campaign, combating poverty and hunger is paramount among other goals, and it is expected to get a "broad-based pro-poor economic growth" in accordance with the RSL.

"The UN has allocated US$ 350,000 for necessary technical assistance to start with in order to strengthen the campaign's monitoring and capacity-building, to ensure participation of other institutions such as the Department of Census and Statistics, Bank of Ceylon, the Education Ministry, and the Health Ministry," he said.
