Remembering Rukmani Devi

A commemorative ceremony to mark the 25th death anniversary of Rukmani Devi the veteran actress called the 'Nightingale of Sri Lanka' will be held on October 28 at Ja-Ela. Rukmani died in a motor accident at Tudella, Ja-Ela on October 28, 1978 causing eternal grief to tens of thousands of fans countrywide.

A memorial to her was later erected at the very spot where she died. It was put up by Miss Leela Kottegoda, a close friend and associate.

During Tuesday's (October 28) ceremony organised by the Colombo Maitland Lions club in association with Miss Kottegoda, a protective fence put up around the Rukmani Devi Memorial will be declared open by Miss Clarice de Silva, a contemporary of Rukmani Devi during her heyday in the film world.

After a floral tribute at memorial, a requium mass for Rukmani and her late husband Eddie Jayamanne will be held at St. Mary's Church, Tudella Ja-Ela at 4 pm. Dinner and medicines will be offered to inmates at the Mark Siri Sarana Sevana Elders Home, Kotugoda. Lion Quintus Rodrigo will handle the arrangements as project chairman in association with Lion President Merryl J. Silva, Dr. Oliver Perera and Lion Reginald.
