Most 'disappearances' in North occurred in 1995 & '96 - Probe team by P. Krishnaswamy The Committee on Disappearances in the Jaffna Region which inquired into 327 complaints of disappearances and involuntary 'removals' of non-combatant Tamil and Muslim civilians during the period 1990 - 1998 has found that 246 Tamils had disappeared at the hands of the Government security forces and 25 Muslims at the hands of the LTTE. Two Tamils were gunned down by the army and three reported disappeared, had later returned to their homes, the committee has reported. It has confirmed that five more Tamils had also disappeared but could not ascertain how or under what circumstances. It has stated that the bulk of the disappearances had occurred during the years 1995 and 1996 when the displaced people returned to their homes in the Northern peninsula. |
