Sri Lanka to face toughest 7's challenge ever

There will be trials to pick the National 7's Squad for the 3 tournaments back to back. The national selectors have named a pool of 22 from the recently concluded mercantile 7's tournament which, will be added to the original squad from the Kandy International 7's held in September 2003.

The pool of 22 will have trials (date to be announced) to pick the final Sri Lanka 7's Squad for the up-coming international tournaments. A final 20 will be picked based on the tough assignment and heavy tournament schedule during end of November and December 2003. Players will be required to sustain a serious pressure training schedule coupled with endurance, power and over all physical and mental conditioning.

Kandy 7's Squad: Radhika Hettiarachchi, Sumedha Jayasinghe, Sithara Fernando, Dilip Selvam, P. Chaturanga, Amjad Bucks, P. Liyanage, N. Ibrahim, C. Thushara, D. Kumara, D. Pushpakumara.

Pool for trial: Malikarachchi Sajith, M. Mushtaque, Lalindra Rodrigo, Kapila Silva, Vithanage (all from Sampath Banka), Lakela Perera and Kishan Musafer (HNB Bank) , Dilan Abeygunawardena, Anuradha, Z. Halimdeen (all from Growth Lanka), Sivakantha Pradeep (Aitken Spence), Dinesh Sanjewa (Cap AE), M. Renaz (Amana group), Berty Jayasekara, Dilanka Wijesekara, D. Lewke (all from CH & FC), Harin Kaluarachchi (CR & FC), Fernando Roshan (Air Force), Fernando Parakum (Army SC), Malawanna, Ruwanthilaka, Jayasooriya (all from Navy SC).

The three tournaments that Sri Lanka are scheduled to participate in are Second Kings Cup International Rugby Sevens Tournament on November 29 and 30th November in Thailand where 16 teams will play in four groups. Sri Lanka plays in 'Pool A' with Chinese Taipei, Netherlands and Arabian Gulf. In 'Pool B' are: Germany, Malaysia, Spain and China. In 'Pool C' are: Kazakhstan, Russia, Belgium and Thailand, while in 'Pool D' are: Denmark, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Then Sri Lanka will play in the Dubai sevens from December 3 to 5. There are 16 teams once again and Sri Lanka will play in 'Pool A' along with England, France and Morocco. Pool 'B' will have New Zealand, Argentina, Namibia and Arabian Gulf, while 'Pool C' will comprise Fiji, Samoa, Canada and Zimbabwe, while in 'Pool D' will be South Africa, Australia, Kenya and Zambia.

There will be 16 teams once again for the South Africa Sevens tourney on December 12 and 13.

Sri Lanka will play in 'Pool D' this tourney alongside South Africa, Samoa and Namibia, while in 'Pool A' will be England, Argentina, Canada and Uganda, 'Pool B' will comprise New Zealand, France, Morocco and Zimbabwe, while in 'Pool C' will be Fiji, Australia, Kenya and Zambia.
