Conrad Francis plans out strategy for Olympic games

The golden boy of Sri Lanka swimming Conrad Francis who won 'double' gold medals at the Asian Age Group Swimming Championships in August in Macaao, China will participate in eight meets in Australia in preparation for the Olympic Games in Ahens 2004.

Conrad has begun training under Mark Thompson, head coach Nunawading Swimming Club, Forest Hill, Victoria.

Coach Thompson has given some realistic predictions concerning the progress of Conrad Francis in his best event the 100 metres butterfly stroke. The winning times below, assume an improvement of 1% per year which is achievable for an athlete of Conrad's age and ability.

Event - 100 meres butterly, times achieved at 2003 World Championships Barcelona 00:56:55 secs. Goal times for 2004 Olympic Games (assume 1% improvement) 00:55:98 secs.

Goal times for 2005 Asian Games (assume 1% improvement) 00:56:42 secs. Goal times for 2006 Commonwealth Games (assume 1% improvement) 00:54:87 secs. The 'B' qualifying time for the Olympic Games in the men's 100 metres butterly is 00:56:16 secs and would need to be achieved at the 2004 Australian Championships (Olympic Selection Trials) or some other international meet to be decided.

Listed below is the competition program for Conrad leading up to Athens 2004. November 15-16 Albury North-Lavington Meet. November 26-30-FINA World Cup, Melbourne (Entries must be organised through National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka as soon as possible).

December 6,7,13,14 - Swimming Victoria December Competition.

January 2nd to 6th - 2004 Victorian Swimming Championships.

February 7-8 - 2004 Victorian Sprint Championships February 21 - Nunawading Club Championships.

March 27 to April 3-2004 Australian Championships (Olympic Selection Trials). Australian Grand Prix Series (dates to be announced).
