KDHA hope to have Astro Turf hockey ground by KANDY SPORTS CORR. An Astro Turf hockey grounds to stage international matches and to give the local hockey players the necessary exposure and playing experience may be a reality soon if the Kandy District Hockey Association (KDHA) gets the necessary funds to put up the modern ground at the proposed Sports Ministry Sports Complex at Digana - about 15 kilometres off Kandy. The Honorary Secretary of the Kandy District Hockey Association and Senior Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation Rasiah Maheswaran told this correspondent that during his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur for a Asian hockey parley, as a representative of the SLHF he was successful in obtaining a sum of Rs 110 lakhs for the construction of an Astro ground for Kandy at an estimated cost of Rs 310 lakhs. The International Hockey Federation, through the Asian Hockey Federation were willing to give them a sum of Rs 110 lakhs for this project but the balance Rs. 200 lakhs will have to be found locally to complete this ground. The Sports Ministry Sports Complex is on a eight-acre block of land which was previously owned by the Mahaweli Authority and is in the mid-country dry zone and the proposed Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium is also not far away. This hockey grounds will be completed with a car park. But the Kandy District HA is facing a herculean task in finding the balance sum of Rs 200 lakhs to embark on this project. Rasiah Maheswaran said they had made appeals to the Ministry of Sports, Ministry of Sports of the Central Province, Chief Minister of the Central Province, Sri Lanka Hockey Federation, and also to the Ministers from the Kandy District - Tissa Attanayake (Central Region Development), Lakshman Kiriella (Plantation Industries), Keheliya Rambukwella (Science & Technology) Lucky Jayawardena (Land Registration) and Al Haj A. R. M. Abdul Cader (Co-operatives). They are hopeful that they will be able to find the balance Rs 200 lakhs to complete this project which will give Kandy's hockey a new dimension. |
