Schoolboy Binupa Wijesinghe set to win Lectra golf title

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr.

Thirteen year-old Binupa Wijesinghe, a student leads the Lectra Grand Prix men's division one race for Lectra golf championship with 550 points to his credit at the end of the fourth round in the month competition organised by the Victoria Golf Club and worked off every month in Digana.

Binupa Wijesinghe at present, appears to be in an unassailable position having obtained 100 points each in June and July 2003 and a whopping 250 points in August and 100 points in September to total 550 points to his credit.

In second place way behind is Shehan Ramanayake with 75 points. In third place is Tony Witham with 74 points. Last year's Lectra Grand Prix winner Sirath Kasthuriratne is lying 10th with 28 points. Veteran golfers will have to come up with something extra special in the next eight rounds if they are to displace the schoolboy Binupua Wijesinghe.

The first ten places are:

1. Binupa Wijesinghe 550 points, 2. Shehan Ramanayake 75 points, 3. Tony Witham 74 points, 4. Engman Joakim 73 points, 5. Nihal Alagoda 65 points, 6. Sunil Jayakoddy 65 points, 7. Nimal Wettimuny 55 points, 8. Srinivas Rao 51 points, 9. Rohan de Silva 50 points, 10. Sirath Kasthuriratne 28 points.

Expatriate Veinert Holm leads the men's division two race with 363 points having accumulated 350 points in the month of June, 2003, but thereafter hardly made any impression obtaining only 13 points in the next three months. In second place is Mike Emott with 352 points, in third place is Sam Gunaratne with 343 points. Thus the division II championship is still wide open. The other positions are: No. 4. M. Hayakawa 258 points, 5. K. Suzuki 250 points, 6. K. Nonoyama 225 points, 7. Sanjay Wettimuny 190 points, 8. K. Hirozawa 180 points, 9. Chamil Wickremasinghe 151 points, 10. K. Hayakawa 151 points.

Suwen Selvaratnam who won the Ladies Grand Prix last year leads the race for ladies with 265 points and is followed by Niloo Jayatillake with 180 points. In third slot is Collins Sally with 135 points. Indira Tibblin is in fourth place with 111 points and Yvonne Abeyratne is in fifth position with 65 points.
