India donates 3.6 million roofing sheets for poor

Cadjan and thatched roofs of all houses in the island will be replaced with roofing sheets provided by the government free of charge. The government will spend a sum of two billion rupees under an Indian line of credit to achieve this task Ninety-thousand houses will be repaired under this programme, an official of the National Housing Development Authority, told 'Lankapuvath'.

3.6 million roofing sheets will be granted to families living in towns, villages and estates. The agreement providing for the supply of roofing sheets was signed at the general Treasury recently.

Two Indian government owned companies will supply the roofing material. Residents in all electorates will benefit by the gesture with each family given 3 flat sheets and 26 corrugated sheets. The first consignment of roofing sheets will arrive in the island next month.
