Sea planes to be deployed soon - Peter Hill

by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South group corr

Sea planes or float carriers will make their appearance by November 15, this year and this will help with a quicker mode of transport from Katunayake International Airport to various destinations where there is facility for landing of these planes said the Chief Executive Officer of the SriLankan Airlines Peter Hill.

He made these observations at the presentation of awards of the 8th SriLankan Airlines Golf Classic organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel in Kandy.

Over 180 golfers from 14 countries including Sri Lanka participated in this biggest ever Golf Festival held over four days at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. Speaking on a lighter vein Peter Hill said that they intended to use these sea planes during the Gold Classics but due to technical problems they had to wait for another day for this big occasions.

This is usual with all aeroplanes which arrive late at times and sometimes do not arrive at all amidst laughter from the audience. But next time they will be there for certain. Peter Hill said that it will take around 30 minutes to fly from the Katunayake International Airport to the Victoria reservoir and with the reduction in the travelling time, there will be more participants and the tourists could land at a point closer to their intended destination.

The General Manager of the Victoria Golf and Country Resort Tony Witham said that the deployment of Sea Planes for domestic travel will not only help golfers to reach the Victoria Golf Course in the shortest possible time but also will be less tiring for the golfers as they will virtually landing on the golf course itself as the Victoria reservoir which is the landing point runs mostly around the golf course. This will also help to promote tourism.

The Secretary of the Victoria Golf and Country Resort Mrs. Janine Weeratunga when contacted said that using sea planes for domestic transport will help the golfers a great deal and they will be arriving from the Airport to the golf course quickly and this should help to promote golf in the country.
