President postpones New Delhi visit

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has postponed her scheduled visit to the Indian capital New Delhi, this week.

Presidential spokesperson Janadasa Peiris said that the postponement was mainly due to the current situation in the country and another date would be announced later.

'Emergency' was not proclaimed

The Presidential Secretariat in a press release on Friday, refuted newspaper reports about a state of emergency being declared on November 5 and then rescinded subsequently.

A state of emergency becomes law only after the President signs a proclamation to that effect. The President did not sign such a proclamation and as such there is no truth in these reports, the release states.

Treasury allocation fully utilised

According to the Ministry of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees (MRRR), the Treasury allocation for the payment of compensation to victims in the North has been fully utilised for this year. The Treasury allocation for war victims in the North amounting to Rs. 57.5 million for 801 persons, including public servants and the general public has been paid under various compensation schemes implemented upto August 2003.

According to Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees, Dr Jayalath Jayawardena, the Ministry has submitted a Cabinet memorandum seeking a further sum to pay compensation for 9,700 processed applications. In addition, 35,000 more applications are being processed by the respective Government Agents. According to the caseload, the total amount required is Rs. 1,855 million. The Ministry is awaiting the release of these funds to pay compensaiton for the outstanding applications.

Kidney donor wanted

Charith Pelpola (30) is suffering from kidney failure and is in urgent need of a kidney transplant as recommended by his nephologist Dr. Gordon Ku. Remuka needs assistance

Mr. G.H.A.D.P. Renuka of 168/A2 of Brahmanagama, Pannipitiya is seriously ill and warded at the Sri Jayawardenapura Hospital (ICU). According to Mrs. E.M. Gnanawathie, wife of Remuka she has to pay nearly Rs. 4 lakhs as hospital charges and medicine.

She finds it difficult to foot the medical and other hospital expenses due to needy circumstances.

Those desirous of contributing to this worthy cause are requested to remit their contributions to Bank of Ceylon, Maharagama branch A/c No. 100551154151.

Seek help

Parents of a mentally retarded son aged 31 appeal for financial assistance from well-wishers for his medical treatment, rehabilitation and occupational therapy in Sri Lanka and India.

Assistance sought

Mr. Chaminda Perera, 24-year-old, father of two children at No. 59 German Hithumitugama Makandana Madapatha is suffering from acute Mitral and Aortic value disease and need early surgery according to consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. G.A.C. Amarasekera the double valve replacement surgery can be performed at Nawaloka Hospital Limited, at a cost of Rs. 460,000. Half the amount will be released by the President's Fund and Mr. C. Perera seeks generous contribution from the public to save his life.

Donations for eyesurgery

H. M. Esupulebbe, father of three children, from Katukeliyawa-Pubbogama, Madatugama in the Anuradhapura District, has lost his sight in both eyes and doctors are of the view that he could regain his sight through surgery which has to be performed in India.

The total cost for surgery will be Rs. 200,000

As Esupulebbe is a poor person, is unable to find the funds and seeks assistance from philanthropists, donors and social institutions. Donations can be made to Account No. 207-014863-6, People's Bank, Galkiriyagama Branch - 301.
