78th Boxing Nationals Nov. 21 to 23

The 78th Boxing National Championships organised by the Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka will be held on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of November 2003, at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Kotahena, commencing at 5.00 p.m. on each day.

This meet is open to non-novice boxers between 17 to 34 years of age. They should at least have been winners or runners-up at novices, intermediate or stubbs shield championships or winners of junior championships. A club can enter more than one team.

There are 11 weight categories to contest ranging from the lowest light fly weight under 48Kgs. Ascending up to the highest, the super heavy weight which is over 91 Kgs.

This meet is also considered as the first selection trial for Islamabad SAF Games in March and also for Asian Olympic trials to be held in Manila, in January and in Neiging in February.

The preliminary weigh-in preceeded by the medical examination and followed by the draw of bouts will be held on Friday, 21st November at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. On subsequent days, the medical examination and weigh-in will be held between 8.00 a.m. and 9.00 a.m. In the contests held so far, Army has been the most dominating with 29 victories. The YMCA Colombo comes second with 12 wins. Police have conquered 8 times, Navy have won 6 times while Air Force have won 5 times.

Apart from the three armed forces and Slimline, other clubs competing will be Police, Prisons, Colombo YMCA, Seevali B.C., Kandy Y.M.C.A., Unichela Sports Club Panadura, Veyangoda B.C., Meerigama B.C., Nugegoda B.C., Kotte B.C., Kalutara District B.C., Pilimatalawa B.C., Peradeniya B.C., and Vidyartha B.C.

Entries for Nationals close on 10th November with Brigadier Jagath Jayasuriya, Hony Secretary, A.B.A. of Sri Lanka at No. 53/2, Temple Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwala.
