Work toward peace, religious heads tell President, PM

Religious leaders who gathered at the BMICH premises on Thursday appealed to the President, Prime Minister and all political party leaders to work together towards peace through a process of power-sharing. The "Sandeshaya" which they presented to the political leaders recommended that a discussion group should be formed with representatives of the President, Prime Minister, LTTE leadership and all party leaders.

It also recommended that a solution to the conflict within a definite timeframe should be found and talks should be held somewhere within the country. They also appealed to the President and Prime Minister to enter into an intelligent dialogue and to resolve the crisis, giving due consideration to the peace and prosperity of the country. It also pointed out that the prevailing climate is not conducive to holding elections.

Asgiri Chapter Chief Incumbent of the Siyam Maha Nikaya the Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Mahanayaka Thera presiding over the function organised by the Inter-Religious Alliance for National Unity, attributed disagreements within the Sinhala community in the past as one of the reasons for the present crisis and said that responsibility should be taken by both major parties to solve the national problem. At the same time, the prelate also warned the government not to put the lives of the people in the North or South in danger by giving too much power to the LTTE.

The Rt. Rev. Fr. Oswarld Gomis, Colombo Archbishop, said that the President and the Prime Minister should come to a consensus as a first step and that both should seek the support of the other parties together. He said that he would not recommend a national government, but added that whatever the process that is taken should be capable of solving the country's major problem.

Prof. Ven. Kumburugamuwe Vajira Thera, Chairman of the Alliance, said that unless the major parties come to a compromise, the present political turmoil would worsen and would lead the country to disaster.

The thera asked the President, Prime Minister, party leaders and LTTE leadership to shed all their differences for the sake of the country and work for a political consensus. (DPL)
