FPASL wins Country Award for Excellence in Population Reporting

The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka has won the coveted Country Award for Population Reporting.

The award will be presented at the forthcoming Annual Global Media Awards for Excellence in Population Reporting to be held on December 3 at the TransAsia Hotel. A spokesman for the FPASL said that the award was doubly significant as this was the 50th anniversary of the Association.

This is the 24th year that the Population Institute, an international, educational non-profit organisation that seeks to reduce excess population growth will hold its annual award ceremony, and the first time it will be held in Sri Lanka. The Population Institute Media Awards are devoted to drawing attention to worldwide population issues. The award honours those who have contributed towards creating awareness of population problems through their journalistic endeavour, a spokesman for the Institute stated.

This year's awards go for the Best Columnist, Best International Daily, Best Periodical, (TIME Magazine) Most Conscientious News Service (IPS), Best Editorial Support on Behalf of Population, Best Radio Program, Best Population/Environmental Reporting Effort, Best Population Journal, Best Commercial Advertising Effort, Lifetime Journalistic Achievement Award, Best use of Media in Population Reporting and Best Country report.

The recipients hail from the US, UK, Brazil, Mexico and Canada among other countries. Sri Lanka's award was based on the Report sent in connection with the Golden Anniversary celebrations in which the FPASL has described its achievement in successfully bringing down the country's population with various family planning methods and its successful Reproductive Health awareness program, among other population-related achievements.
