Ward Place drug baron arrested

by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE

After several months of detective work, the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) sleuths were able to crack down what was known as a heroin dump at a plush residence at Ward Place, Colombo 7, last Friday.

A large quantity of heroin weighing 23 kgs and 13 grams with a street value of Rs. 46 million was found in the house along with Rs. 580,280 in cash when the detectives swooped in.

Director, Police Narcotics Bureau, SSP, Pujith Jayasundera said the suspect arrested was the biggest drug baron wanted by them for distributing heroin throughout the country. "He was also a businessman dealing in gems and we kept his house under surveillance for some time."

The suspect's wife and two accomplices including a threewheeler scooter driver were also arrested.

Jayasundera said that there are 54 drug barons in the country and they are keeping a close tab on them.

Meanwhile three police teams have been deployed to monitor the flow of heroin to Sri Lanka from neighbouring countries. The arrested drug baron will be kept under detention for interrogation before being produced in court, police said.
