Bedlam in TULF camp?

by S. Selvakumar

The crucial executive committee meeting of the Tamil United Liberation Front will be held today at the party headquarters to decide on the fate of the presidency of Parliamentarian V. Anandasangaree. The meeting which begins at 10 a.m. is scheduled to discuss a no-confidence motion to be brought against Anandasangaree.

At an earlier general membership meeting held in July Anandasangaree emerged unscathed with a staggering majority endorsing his leadership. Central Committee sources said though six MPs were against his leadership, the majority of the 36 member committee looks certain to endorse his leadership again.

Tamil political party insiders say the trouble started brewing when he expressed views opposing the stand of the rest of the TULF parliamentarians that the LTTE is the sole representative of the Tamils. Anandasangaree's view was though he was fully supportive of the Tigers' leadership in the peace negotiations but not of the Tamil population.

Several other charges brought against him by the other 6 TULF MPs have been vehemently denied by Anandasangaree. The main mover for his ouster is Batticaloe District Parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham. Earlier Pararajasingham in his capacity as Vice President of the TULF submitted a resolution of the Batticaloe District Committee which urged Anandasangaree to step down.

In response Anandasangaree said that he would definitely step down if that was the genuine wish of the party members, but he is answerable to the over 36,000 people who voted for him but would step down only if the majority of party members wish.

Meanwhile, both Pararajasingham and Sampanthan spoken to Anadasangaree on friday about today's meeting according to party sources. But the contents of the discussions were not revealed. Certain party sources said the central committee may ultimately decide on some compromise to avoid a split.
