The chief guest C. H. (Channa) Gunasekera a former All Ceylon Cricketer and a distinguished old boy of Royal College said that his mind went back on his old school days many years ago when there was no colours awards ceremony and the colours were awarded by the Principal at the morning assembley of the whole school.

However, he said that a new tradition has been started, a tradition that he fully endorses. Like at a prize giving, the students who have excelled in the academic field, and the colours awards ceremony is a recognition for a sportsman. In his brief speach, Gunasekera said that he is a sportman and not a speech-maker and had no intention in making lengthly speech. He finally requested all to make maximum use of the facilities available.

He said that he could never have dreamt during his days, about the facilities that are available at present and had they had the same facilities they would have had a couple of world beaters.

He urged the students to make use facilities so that they could enhance their sporting skills. that will in return benefit oneself, school and more importantly the country.
