SLTA playing section fancied to win Inter-Club Tennis C'ships

by LAL GUNESEKERA

The SLTA Playing Section who have teams spanning all 10 divisions are the favourites to win the Inter-Club Tennis Championship this year, unless the likes of SSC or Queen's Club are to challenge them. The tournament today (November 30) and December 6 and 8 at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Greenpath is being sponsored by People's Bank for the third consecutive year with Dunlop being the official ball courtesy Sports Pavilion.

The tournament has grown in popularity and this year, it has attracted 45 teams from all over the island.

The clubs will be slotted into the 10 divisions depending on the strength of each side. Each Division will play a round robin league with the two top teams meeting each other in the Divisional finals.

The Chief of Marketing and Public Affairs of the People's Bank, Deepal Abeysekera, said that his bank was honoured to be associated with the Inter-Club Championship where it has a rich tradition and for the quality it produces. He further said that the People's Bank was happy with the efforts of the SLTA to take Tennis islandwide (even to the rural areas).

President of the SLTA Suresh Subramaniam, whilst thanking People's Bank for their sponsorship, said that clubs have a greater role to play down the road to complete professionalism. He said that SLTA's next step is to give the clubs the opportunity of hosting the ITF Pro Tournaments.
