Trinity - 'Lions' share of mini rugby trophies

by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN - Kandy Sports Corr

It was a lion's share of trophies by Trinity College's Lion cubs as they won both the 'A' division and 'B' division under-13 Mini Rugby titles in the tournament organised by the Central Province Schools Rugby Football Association and played at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy.

Trinity's 'A' team led by Henry Hopwood on their way to the finals drew with Kingswood College 7-all, trounced Vidyartha College 40-0, drubbed Sri Rahula College 56-0. Next they met their traditional rivals St. Anthony's College, Katugastota and beat them in style 19-0 which is a convincing margin considering the strength of the Eagles who are not bound to go down without a fight.

Then came the finals against St. Sylvester's College another outfit known for their fighting qualities and beat them quite comfortably 14-nil with the scores made up of two goals. Trinity Cubs thus scored 136 points in just five matches whilst conceding only 7 points to the Kingswoodians. Rest of the matches they won without allowing their opponents to cross their line. This is grand show indeed.

Trinity's 'B' team captained by H. Yatawara put up a stupendous show in their opening match to thrash their traditional rivals St. Anthony's College 49-0. They followed up this with a rousing 45-5 win over St. Sylvester's College. In their third match they made short work of Sri Rahula College beating them 35-7. In the finals against Dharmaraja College they posted a handsome 21-5 win.

Like their 'A' team, the Trinity 'B' team amassed 150 points while conceding only 17 points to their opponents and their line was crossed just three times in four matches. The above performance underlines the supremacy of the Trinitians in 'Mini Rugby' which augurs well for the future.

Trinitians were coached by former Vidyartha, Sri Lanka Army and Kandy Sports Club fly half Priyantha Navaratne and has had the encouragement and guidance of Principal Prof. W. A. Breckenridge and Vice Principal Dr. Hiran Kannangara and the evergreen Administrative Secretary Mohan Samarakoon himself a top rugby player during his school days and later for the Planters Clubs in Dambulla, Dickoya, Uva and Kelani Valley.
