Uphold peace and economic development Copy of a letter sent to President Chandrika Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe by Major and Specialist Constructors Branch National Construction Association of Sri Lanka We fervently appeal to the President, the Prime Minister, the two main political parties and the other constituents of our parliament not to permit in any way the disruption of the path to peace, security and economic growth. All sectors of our economy have suffered a great deal in the past two decades, most of our members have struggled to keep their institutions intact in the midst of tremendous odds. Our economy is gaining momentum and a massive amount of funds pledged by the donor institutions, will be utilized to implement an ambitious programme to modernize our crumbling infrastructure, covering the improvement and re-construction of the existing road network and the new construction of a Intercity high speed expressway network, fishery harbours, ports, industrial parks, Urban Development Projects, housing, telecom networks, water supply projects, power and petroleum projects, hospitals, school and Irrigation Projects, this process should not be undermined. There is finally a chance for Sri Lanka to become an emerging economy and create prosperity for our entire populace as enjoyed by the people of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong etc. We therefore appeal to the powers who have been entrusted with the task of guiding the destiny of this nation to set aside political interests to sit down, reconcile their differences and take our country forward. |
