Landscape 2003 Exhibition and Trade Fair :

Green fingers get busy

The members of the Landscapists' Association of Sri Lanka (LASL) are busy, preparing for the forthcoming Landscape Exhibition which is to be held for the third time at the All Ceylon Buddhist Congress (ACBC) premises from December 12 to 14.

The miniature landscaped plots will be designed according to a theme. Designing a plot with a water feature will be perhaps the most popular item at the exhibition, says a press release from the Association. The President of the Association Dushyanthi Baptist and the Exhibition Chairman Hema Weerasinghe told the Sunday Observer that schoolchildren will also take part in 'designing garden plots' competition which will be another competition feature with a challenge trophy for the winning school.

Trade stalls and plant stalls with various types of hard landscape objects and hundreds of 'do it yourself' garden ideas will enlarge one's own horizons of garden knowledge and skills at this Landscape Exhibition.

The LASL was founded in 1996, by 20 landscape lovers just after following a three-months course conducted by the JICA Alumni Association in 1996. The founder President of the Association was Christine Fernando.

Within a span of six years the LASL has risen its membership strength upto 100, under the guidance of the qualified landscape designer Kamal Perera who has been with them throughout. Up to now it is the only such Association in Sri Lanka.

Being an eco -friendly organisation the main concern of the LASL is to maintain the environment around us with well laid out gardens however small it be.

Focusing on this fact the Association organised a Garden Competition among its members at the beginning of this year, and hopes, to continue it annually.

Apart from that LASL conducts two courses in landscaping, and all who follow the courses opt to join the Association.

CIC Agri Businesses and Ceylon Cold Stores will be the co-sponsors of this upcoming landscape exhibition which will give a 'face lift' to the ACBC premises for the three days of the exhibition with their little landscaped plots studded all over their garden.
