IGP crisis drags on by Jayampathy Jayasinghe The appointment of a permanent Inspector General of Police (IGP) following the retirement of T. E. Anandarajah, two months ago has been put off until the Constitutional Council meets again on December 18 to discuss the issue governmental sources said. It is learnt that the Council has referred the matter to a committee to look into the suitability of several senior DIGs. The Committee will examine the seniority and other relevant criteria of senior DIGs before making their recommendation to the Council. The names of senior officers Chandra Fernando, Indra De Silva, Gamini Randeni, Jayatissa Herath and Sirisena Herath have been forwarded to the Council earlier by the Interior Ministry and a decision is most likely to be taken soon. According to informed sources the letter sent by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to the recommending the appointment of Senior DIG, T.I. de Silva as IGP has been referred to the Committee for evaluation along with the seniority list prepared by the National Police Commission (NPC). Earlier the Council was not in agreement in appointing Indra De Silva to the post on the recommendation of the President. The President has recommended Indra de Silva for the post for the second time. A few years earlier several Senior DIGs filed Fundamental Rights (FR) application before the Supreme Court to determine their seniority in the department and the matter was referred to the National Police Commission. |
