Two new rail services

Sri Lanka Railways Authority (SLRA) has introduced a weekend service and a city service for the benefit of its commuters. SLRA General Manager - Operations (GMO) K. A. Premasiri, said that the weekend service began yesterday from Kandy to Colombo and, depending on its success next weekend, it would be introduced to Matara.

"The train 'Denuwara Menike' will leave Colombo at 8.00 a.m and reach Kandy at 10.55 a.m. The return journey will begin from Kandy at 1.15 pm and reach Colombo at 16.15 p.m on both Saturdays and Sundays," the GMO said. There will be two categories of tickets for the Denuwara Menike priced at Rs. 25 and Rs. 50. Commuters who travel a distance of less than 50 kms will be charged Rs. 25 and more than that Rs. 50.

The city service beginning tomorrow (Dec.15) will comprise four trains leaving from the Colombo Fort station to Moratuwa at 10.30 a.m, 11.00 a.m, 12.15 p.m and 12.45 p.m daily. "We have deployed these as 'shoppers' trains' as the festive season has begun. If it proves profitable, we would introduce another service to Ragama," Premasiri added.
