Diverse journalists' views vital for co-existence by Elmo Leonard The views of journalists in the north of Sri Lanka should be published in newspapers in the south and vice versa, as a means of advocating ideals and aspirations of the citizens on both sides of the island, for peaceful co-existence following decades of conflict. This was observed by Sinhala language journalist, Ariyananda Dombagahawatte at a workshop jointly organised by the National Peace Council and the North-South Journalists' Association, held in Colombo, last week. On this premise the Udayan newspaper, published in Jafffna, reproduces articles from the Sinhala Lankadeepa newspaper, Dombagahawatte said. Towards fulfilling economic and sociological aspirations of the people of the north, south and east, newspapers published in various parts of the country should invite journalists from far away areas to write for their respective publications, Dombagahawatte said. Such moves would inspire for the creation of a national media culture, he said. |
