Public outcry to preserve Galle Fort The Galle Fort World Heritage site Protection society has appealed to preserve the Galle Fort from foreigners encroaching with plans of opening liquor restaurants, hotels and casinos. The first meeting of the Galle Fort World Heritage site protection society was held on December 7, where, all religious dignitaries and senior citizens from Galle had participated. Al-Haj Moulavi M. Zuhur of Lecturer Arabic College said that the Al Bahjathul Ibrahimiya Galle Fort Arabic College which has been in operation for a little over 100 years, an institute of learning and discipline, peacefully co-existed with other religious institutions had produced 1000 of Moulavis and Islamic Scholars. He appealed to the people not to make hasty decisions in selling the rich, valuable heritage site properties. The Most Venerable Viharadhipathi Pallattara Sumana Jothi Nayaka Thera said that, Sri Lanka being a Buddhist country where other religions have been practised along with Buddhism successfully in the past. Tourism does not mean selling the world heritage site and Government properties to foreigners. The most venerable Baddegama Devarakitha Nayaka Thera stated at all cost the religion, culture and educational institutes should be protected for the welfare of the future generations and for its rarity values. Ms. Suha Cassim, one of the executive committee members strongly protested that Galle Fort is not a money making machine and that should be protected at any cost. |
