Int'l human rights day observed Under the theme of " A day for the rights of the plantation people', a mass rally and demonstration was held by the Kandy Human Development Organisation (HDO) on the International Human Rights Day, December 10, in Colombo. People from all walks of life, including a large number of plantation workers, attended it including several other human rights groups. After the rally and demonstration, a public meeting was held at 2.30 pm at Campbell Park, Borella, which was addressed by HDO chief organiser, P.P. Sivapragasam, Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara and several others. US State Dept. official due here Mr. Nicholas Dean, the Deputy Director of the Office for India, Nepal and Sri Lankan Affairs within the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of South Asian Affairs, will visit Sri Lanka next week. While in Sri Lanka, Mr. Dean will meet several government officials, political leaders, non-governmental groups, and private individuals in Colombo and Jaffna. German aid for IDPs The German Government has provided a sum of Rs. 20 million to assist war-affected communities in border villages in the North Central Province. The project will assist more than five-hundred families displaced by the 20-year long war and its activities will be implemented in most affected villages in Horowpothana and Tantirimale areas. The German assistance will be provided through the W. P. Schmitz Foundation, a leading NGO in Germany. Abhimana Community Development Centre will implement the project activities in collaboration with their partner agencies. The main focus of this project is to increase household livelihood security of Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and other war-affected families through agriculture, livestock, microfinance and food security. Oldest Cathedral in dilapidated condition St. Lucia's the First Cathedral in Sri Lanka and a prime Church of Colombo is now in a dilapidated condition. The building needs immediate repairs to continue the mission to the people for whom first the wooden Chapel with a cadjan thatched roof built in 1764. It is now 115 years old and needs a thorough repair with re-plastering of the entire external surface and painting with a weather-shield coat on the exterior and rubber-based washable paint in the interior. The work will cost around Rs. Ten million. The Parish Pastoral Council together with the Community Development Committee have organised various fund-raising projects, the launching of a raffle, Musical show and a car wash, are some of the projects to raise part of the funds necessary for renovation. The Church authorities invite the generous support of the public to carry out the renovation project of the Church building. 'Five artists: Five visions' Recent works of Five Young Sri Lankan Artists will be displayed at the exhibition named " Five Artists : Five Visions" from December 16 to January 16th, 2004 at the Thambapani Restaurant at 496, Duplication Road, Colombo 3. The one-month long exhibition is the first ever exhibition of Harsha Madumalee de Silva, from Ambalangoda, Ravindra Tenuara Amblangoda, Anupama Nilakshi Bandara, Colombo, Deeptha Sri Vdayanga , Ampara and Sarangee Nilukshika Hettiarachchi, Badulla. X'mas cards from PAFFREL People's Action for Free and fair Elections (PAFFREL) has put out six types of Greeting Cards for the season as a part of the Local Fund-raising project of the organisation. The photos fund in these cards were selected from a poster competition held among students to encourage them to bring out their latent talents and improve same for the future of the country. While cards are meant for all section of society, these are specially recommended for organisations who would like to send greetings to their stakeholders during the season. Ranjani needs financial support Miss Sinnaiah Malayappan Ranjani of No 18/1, Kaduwela, Ukuwela, Matale, a heart patient has been advised by Dr. Sivakumar of Apollo Hospital to undergo Percutaneous Device Closure of ASD to save her life. The cost of the operation is around Rs.350,000. As she is unable to bear the cost of the operation she solicits the financial support of the generous public. Rodrigo has to undergo a kidney transplantation operation in India without delay and is unable to proceed due to insufficient funds. Mr. & Mrs. Rodrigo are dedicated social workers who work for the welfare of deaf children in Sri Lanka and have contributed largely for this purpose. Today they require financial assistance themselves and wish to appeal to kind hearted individuals and organisations to assist them.
