Mahanayaka Thera, other prelates urge President-Premier consensus

The Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, other leading Theras and prelates of other religions in a special public appeal last Wednesday called on the President and the Prime Minister to "act together for peace".

The Most Ven. Udagama Sri Buddharakshitha Rathanapalabhidana Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter, Ven. Wellawatte Gnanabhivansa Thera, Ven. Mahagalkadawala Punyasara Thera, Rajamahaviharadhipathi, Ratvita, Ven. Meegahajandure Gnanarathana Thera, Viharadhipathi, Naga Vihara, Jaffna, Ven. Panditha Mahamankadawala Dhammasiri Thera, General Secretary, Sasanarakshaka Bala Mandalaya, Rajanganaya, His Holiness Thirugnanasambanthar Adheenam, Chief Incumbent, Nallur Kovil, Jaffna, Sivashri P. Sivaloganatha Theshigar, Sri Ramalinga Sevashram, Araly, Jaffna, Rt. Revd. Dr. Thomas Savundranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna, Revd. Fr. Damian Fernando, Director, Roman Catholic CARITAS, and Revd. Yohan Devananda, Co-Coordinator, World Solidarity Forum, are among several senior clergy and civil society leaders who met in Colombo on Wednesday and issued this call in a 'People's Manifesto' they jointly signed.

The meeting was convened by the World Solidarity Forum for Justice and Peace in Sri Lanka at the Sri Suvisuddharamaya, Colombo.

The Manifesto also stated:

Both Chandrika Kumaratunga and Ranil Wickremesinghe have equally shown clear initiative in this when power came to their hands. Let them now fore-swear party political advantage and act together for justice and peace for all the peoples in Sri Lanka. That is the people's demand.

The LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka must continue to be the two main negotiators in the peace negotiations. Already, the Muslims are associated in the negotiations. It is very important that the President should in some way be positively associated with the negotiations. Then, the main opposition party/grouping (Sri Lanka Freedom Party/People's Alliance), Tamil and Muslim parties, Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC), the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Sihala Urumaya, etc should in some way be associated.

Meanwhile several leading scholars have urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe not to reject the consensus politics programme proposed by President Kumaratunga.
