Big guns boom on Boxing Day in Bloomfield-Colts local extravaganza by Ranjan Anandappa The big wait is for the local extravaganza. That is when the English, their barmy army and the rest have left our shores, the tour exchanges over. Indeed, despite the running fever on the ongoing Test series between Sri Lanka and England, the gathering dust is as to Boxing Day's show after Christmas which will decide who will be the kings of local cricket. The focus revolves around super star Sanath Jayasuriya's club Bloomfield and another superman Chaminda Vaas' Colts when the big guns will come booming. As it is the gloss had been rather taken away from the semi-final matches a fortnight ago figuring the entry of Bloomfield and Colts with both clubs having some rank and file on national duty. Bloomfield despite not having the services of Jayasuriya and Kumar Dharmasena had a clear passage beating NCC while Colts edged out Galle C.C. The build up is for the die hard support local fans put behind their clubs when the national stars are divided demanding the very best to fill their trophy cupboards. Bloomfield will of course go out slight favourites with the return of Jayasuriya and Dharmasena who is their captain. But they have an ace in their semi-final match winner Saman Jayantha who will be looking to repeat that form in the big'un. Colts will draw heavily on the fast bowling resources of Vaas while their in-form draw will be opening batsman Sajith Fernando who was their match winner with a century along with Shantha Kalavitigoda who also went ton up to give Galle a hammering. The experience of wicket-keeper batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana will be an added impetus with the hero from his hometown Moratuwa looking to answer his fans for whom without 'Little Kalu' in the Sri Lankan team their interest is dampened. |
