Kallis reaches century but West Indies fight back

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 13 (AFP) - Jacques Kallis reached his 12th Test century but South Africa's momentum was slowed on the second day of the first Test against the West Indies at the Wanderers Stadium here on Saturday.

South Africa were 433 for five at lunch, with Kallis unbeaten on 121.

Only 65 runs were added during the morning for the loss of two wickets in 27 overs in contrast to the run glut on the first day when South Africa raced to 398 for three.

The day started promisingly for South Africa when Martin van Jaarsveld clipped Mervyn Dillon firmly through midwicket for four off the fifth ball of the day. But Van Jaarsveld padded up to the next ball, which cut back to trap him leg before wicket for a Test-best 73. It ended a fourth wicket stand of 132 in 136 minutes.

Kallis, on 87 overnight, moved confidently to his century, reaching the landmark with a cut for four off Dillon. He had faced 168 balls and hit ten fours and a six.

With Dillon and Vasbert Drakes bowling with more discipline than the West Indians had shown Friday, maintaining a consistent line on or outside off-stump, Kallis and Neil McKenzie could add only 26 in an hour.

It took McKenzie 18 balls to score his first runs and he made only eight before he hooked at a bouncer from Fidel Edwards and was given out caught behind by umpire Darrell Hair, although he indicated he thought the ball had deflected off his shoulder. Television replays seemed to back up his reaction.

Kallis had an escape on 109 when he mistimed a pull against Edwards and a leaping Dillon at wide mid-on could not hold a difficult chance.

West Indian opening batsman Chris Gayle, who pulled a hamstring while fielding Friday, did not go on the field Saturday, although West Indian team management said he was expected to bat with a runner.
