Milo Lanka Junior open the draw

by Lal Gunasekera

The Milo Sri Lanka Junior under-17 Open Championships over 54 Holes will be worked off at the Royal Colombo Golf Club RCGC course on December 17, 18 and 19. Milo are the sponsors for the second consecutive year.

There will be a large turnout with junior members from the RCGC, Nuwara-Eliya Golf Club (NEGC) and Victoria Golf Club (VGC) and another 25 players from the same clubs invited to compete.

A spokesman for the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) said that the junior national pool will be picked by evaluating the promising players from this tournament.

The Junior Open started in 1981 with Richard Pieris and Company sponsoring the event thanks to Ian Pieris who saw the natural talent of Sri Lanka's young golfers. Nandasena Perera and Anura Rohana, who won silver medals at the Asian Games in 1990 and 2002 respectively turning professional subsequently, both played in this tournament.

Tissa Chandradasa (ranked No. 1 in the UAE) and Lalith Kumara too were produced from this tournament and have done well in international events. Some of the promising youngsters who are strong favourites to win the title this year are Mithun Perera (son of Nandasena Perera), 14-year-old Binupa Wijesinghe (a son of former badminton champion, Samanthi Hettiaratchi) 15-year-old Salein Andrews (a Sri Lankan living in Dubai) and 16-year-old Simon Jones of Victoria Golf Club.
