Nine disciplines in Mayor's Cup Sports Festival

Nine disciplines - soccer, netball, table tennis, softball cricket, leatherball cricket, wrestling, bodybuilding, basketball and carrom have been included in the Mayor's Cup Sports Festival 2003 organised by the Sports and Recreation Department of the Colombo Municipal Council to be held in different venues in Colombo.

The opening ceremony was held yesterday at the Reid Avenue Sports Complex and the events will be worked out until December 20.

Teams participating in the soccer tournament at Reid Avenue Playground are Ratnam SC, Maligawatta Youth SC, Cooray SC, Old Bens SC, Colpetty SC, Movers SC, Vaeni SC and Soccer Promoters SC.

St. Peter's College, C.W.W. Kanangara College, Carey College, Lumbini MV, D.S. Senanayake College, President's College Kotte, Wesley College and Colombo Municipal SC will be the teams taking part in the six-a-side cricket tournament to be worked off at Wesley College grounds. The softball cricket tourney will be played at the Reid Avenue Playground.

The teams in the fray in the netball tournament are Hatton National Bank, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Police, Sri Lanka Air Force, Colombo Municipality, Playgrounds Team and Killinochchi Team at Reid Avenue Playground.

The table tennis tournament has attracted seven teams - Kandy Playgrounds League, St. John's SC, Marawila, Moratuwa YMCA, Southern SC Ambalangoda, Maharagama Youth TTC, Nugegoda TTS and Colombo Municipality at the Sri Lanka Table Tennis Association hall.

The Wrestling Championships at the Public Library, Greenpath will be amongst Armstrong Wrestling Club, Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Gampaha, Young Marians, Kandy Combined Team, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Air Force and Colombo Municipality.

The bodybuilding contest has attracted musclemen from YMBA Fort, Colombo Municipal SC, Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council, Kirula SC, Iron Arm SC, Sirasa Fitness Centre, Panadura Youth Services Council, Super Barbell SC will vie for honours at the Bodybuilding Contest.

The basketball tournament will be worked out at the Kochchikade Playground and the carrom tournament at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters, Reid Avenue.

The champions in all nine sporting events will be presented Mayors Challenge Trophies. There will also be medals, trophies and certificates for champions and runner-ups in the respective disciplines.

The closing ceremony and the awards ceremony will be on December 20 from 3.30 p.m. at the Reid Avenue Sports Complex.

Prasanna Gunawardena Mayor of Colombo, M. Azath S. Salley Deputy Mayor of Colombo, Municipal Councillors and Dr. Jayantha Liyanage, Municipal Commissioner will grace the occasion.
