Bangladesh hopes South Asian summit will usher a good year for region DHAKA, Dec 13 (AFP) Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Morshed Khan Saturday said he hoped a forthcoming South Asian summit in Pakistan would usher in a new area of peace in the region. The process of normalisation of ties between India and Pakistan "is a silver lining, and I am very hopeful as SAARC (the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) was set up with lot expectations on the part of the people of the region," Khan said. "I am very glad that we will all be together to start the new year and I hope the region will get new guidelines to go forward during the summit amid peace and understanding." A three-day SAARC summit is scheduled from January 4 in Islamabad. It was due to be held in January this year, but was put off because of tensions between India and Pakistan, who came to the brink of war last year over the disputed region of Kashmir. Relations have been improving since April this year and the neighbours entered into a ceasefire in Kashmir on November 26. Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has said he will attend the summit of leaders of SAARC, which groups Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. |
