Global knowledge centre in Embilipitiya One of the first pilot Vishva Gnana Kendras (VGKs) of the e-Sri Lanka initiative was opened last week in Embilipitiya. Plans are afoot to create 100 VGKs in the first phase by the end of next year in the North, East and South of the country. The vision of e-Sri Lanka is to harness the benefits of information and communication technology (ICT) towards poverty reduction and growth along with peace building. VGKs, or global knowledge centres, are multi-service community information centres, which provide access to Internet, telephone and other information services and content to the public in rural communities. The main aim of the programme is the delivery of positive economic, social and peace building benefits on a long and sustainable basis. The VGK operator, Vanik Incorporated is one of six parties awarded contracts by the ICT Agency to set up and run the first pilot VGKs. Reshan Dewapura, Program Director, ICT Agency, expressed hope that the people of Embilipitiya will make full use of the VGK and the services it provides for their social and economic benefit. He further added that he hoped that there will be great participation and usage of this VGK and invited the gathering to lend their support to achieve the e-Sri Lanka vision and using ICT to make a positive change for our people and our country. |
