'Fragrance of Peace' from Shyami

A pleasant surprise from singer Shyami this season is the release of her latest CD 'Samaye Suwanda' the (Fragrance of Peace) which she released on December 1. Shyami who hails from an acknowledged musical family made an impact on the music scene in the late 60s and 70s has been working on this album along with her two sisters Yasmin and Marcia, her husband guitarist/singer Alfie Rutnam her uncle Bonnie and her son Ravin.

The CD contains fourteen tracks, three of which are Christmas songs 'Ramedha', 'Devaduthayo' and 'Gavahala'. Speaking with Shyami, she revealed that 'Ramedha' is a song which describes the birth of Jesus while 'Devaduthayo' is about the praise the angels showered at the birth. 'Gavahala' asks the question as to why Jesus was born in a manger and the answer is contained in the composition.

The music was composed by my grandfather Bonnie Fonseka who was a pianist and a choir director at St. Benedict's College. The lyrics were written by Rev. Don Peter''. The music arrangements on the CD were handled by Shyami with conga and guitar tracks added live.

Shyami, besides singing along with Yasmin and Marcia, is joined by her neice Pryani Perera on a track entitled 'Mage Divi Mage' which describes a live journey in a question and answer style.

Quite naturally Samaye Suwanda the title track endorses the need for peace in the world and peace in one's heart.

Shyami who performs as a duo with her husband Alfie teams up with her other two sisters Yasmin and Marcia for guest acts with Sohan and the X'periments. Yasmin of course is the vocalist with X'periments. The CD is original and creative and should find a place on your CD shelf. In the picture Shyami hands over her CD to Sohan. Pic. Herbert Perera
