Doctor's brutal killing : Police still in the dark by JAYAMPATHY JAYASINGHE Three Police teams have been detailed to probe the killing of Dr. W. E. Peter Fernando at his residence in Wadduwa last Thursday by four men who had entered his dispensary around 10.15 p.m. on the pretext of seeking treatment from him, Police said. The incident took place soon after the doctor had closed his dispensary for the day. The doctor's domestic had just switched off the lights while the doctor went into his home which was an extension of his clinic situated on Galle road in Wadduwa. At this stage one of the four men had called over at his dispensary pretended to be critically ill. After the dispensary was opened with lights switched on, the doctor had walked in along with his assistant. Just then one of the men walked up to him and slashed his throat with a sharp cutting instrument in the presence of his domestic. Thereafter the assassin had run towards Panadura while the other three had got on to push bicycles and rode in the same direction. Witnesses had later seen the assassin being picked up by one of them, police said. Doctor Peter Fernando (42) who was rushed to the Panadura hospital had died soon after admission. Doctor Fernando a father of two was attached to the Kethumatie hospital, a state-run institution. His wife too is a Registered Medical Practitioner at the Panadura hospital. ASP Panadura U. H. Dharmasena directing investigations said that the motive for the killing has not been established and several persons are being questioned with regard to the killing. The police finger print experts who visited the dispensary but found no clues, or finger prints, police said. |
