Booty in cricketer's room

Eleven lakhs of rupees was detected in the hotel room occupied by a top order batsman of the Sri Lanka team during the second Test match against England at Asgiriya grounds in Kandy. The roomboy who cleaned the room after the team left for Colombo had found the hard cash and reported the matter to the hotel management which contacted the CID, which subsequently confirmed the finding yesterday.

The cricketer concerned is, an accomplished batsman, but he has never bowled. Was it a bribe to fix the match? Has any interested bookie had a hand in the matter similar to what happened to India's former captain Azaruddin and his South African counterpart Hanse Cronje? Eleven lakhs is not a sum to be forgotten and left behind. Did the batsman concerned 'smell a rat' that the game was up got weak in the knees and surreptitiously left behind the 'ill-gotten' fortune? -S.S
