UNF to maintain neutral stance by Don Asoka Wijewardena With talks between the President and the Prime Minister failing to resolve "the cohabitation crisis", the UNF government has opted for a neutral stance, but has resolved that it will make every effort to convince President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to continue with the peace process. A Senior UNP spokesman told the Sunday Observer that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had reiterated that foreign investments and foreign donations already pledged were at stake due to the political stalemate, and failure to resolve the power-sharing crisis. He said that the Prime Minister was of the view that external as well as internal issues pertaining to both Executive and Legislative powers in the country should not hinder the continuation of the peace process and unprecendent international donations that were due. When asked about the main objective of the UNF at this juncture, the spokesman said that it was the wish of Prime Minister Wickremesinghe to maintain the good image of the government in the minds of international community and donor nations and regain investor confidence as some investors had shown deep reluctance to invest in Sri Lanka due to the current political uncertainity. |
