Report on SL situation sent to Oslo by S. SELVAKUMAR The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Colombo has filed a comprehensive report to Oslo on the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka after her withdrawal as facilitator following the political impasse in Colombo, well informed diplomatic sources revealed. This report follows a visit by the embassy's First Secretary Thomas Stangeland's visit to the North last week. Strangeland toured Jaffna from where he proceeded to Kilinochchi to meet with LTTE Peace Secretariat's head Pulithevan and then to Mannar. According to LTTE sources the First Secretary had extensive talks with Pulithevan on the stalled peace process and has stressed on the necessity to find a solution to the political impasse in Colombo to get Norway involved again as a facilitator. Strangeland has reportedly told the LTTE that the atmosphere prevailing in Colombo at present is not conducive for Norwegian facilitation and had expressed Norway's eagerness to do so once the political situation returns to normal. The meeting was held at Kilinochchi last Tuesday. In Jaffna and Mannar he has met with organizations and individuals concerned in the peace process and held extensive discussions. On his return to Colombo the Embassy filed a report on Starngeland's findings to Oslo. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who met with a Tamil National Alliance delegation at the Parliamentary complex Thursday has said that political and official level discussions to solve the present crisis would start again from the end of this month. TNA sources said that the delegation prevailed upon the Prime Minister, the necessity to recommence the peace negations very soon failing which it could lead to new developments that could further precipitate the crisis. |
