Under 19 squad pretty good says coach Sumithra

Sri Lanka under-19 coach, Sumithra Warnakulasuriya, who will be taking out a 14-member squad for the Under-19 Commonwealth Cricket Championships from December 28-January 11, said that he was quite satisfied with the available talent.

"The squad looks pretty good. The batting seems to be the strong point while the bowling is not bad", commented Warnakulasuriya who said that the boys had basically been training under D.S. de Silva prior to him taking over.

Warnakulasuriya, the former Royal College, CCC cricketer turned coach, who is also coach to his former club, said that the job had 'come my way almost at the last minute' and therefore he needed sufficient time to appraise himself with his charges.

"I've had a few training sessions," said the coach who said that two trial matches would be played on Monday the 22 and Tuesday the 23 at the P. Sara Stadium to prepare for the upcoming tour. Sri Lanka is led by Royalist Tharaka Kottahewa with D.S. Senanayake College's Kanchana Gunawardena as his deputy. The squad is expected to take wing on December 24 for the 15-day tournament to be competed by some 10 countries in the region.

Warnakulasuriya said that his first priority would be qualifying for the semi-finals, failing which the Plate Championships.

The tour has been organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association (SLCA) with funding from Sri Lanka Cricket.
