Bakthi's festive fare by LAKMAL WELABADA
Judith Bakthi Panditharatne of Eco Gallery is an artist and a handicrafts woman entrepreneur who has developed a style of her own using a blend of traditional and modern art on raw cotton cloth with fabric paints. Bakthi was the dress designer of many recent pageants held in Sri Lanka at international level. She has done unique dress designs and exquisite interior arrangements for many individuals, apparels industries and hotels here as well as abroad. Sharing her creative ideas in interior arrangements with our readers to have a colourful season, Bakthi gave a few handy hints on how to handle hand painted stuff at home.
"When you are doing a painting on raw cloth never forget to pre-wash it and remove the starch in it, as otherwise you will loose the paint if you try to paint a design straightaway on it and then wash. The paint will get washed away with starch," she explained. "Secondly, when you want to clean the handpainted stuff, hand or machine wash them at home with a home-detergent. If you want to get them washed in a laundry, never forget to indicate that your items are 'hand painted' and instruct them to use a mild detergent to clean the spots and dirt. This is because, strong detergents might kill the design by pulling the paint out from the material," she said. |
